WHAT is the church verses WHO are the church?
Whenever we hear the word church…we think building…We think brick and stone…We think concrete location…but what does the bible say…
If we ask the wrong question we get the wrong answer. The word “what” is the wrong question…when we ask who is the church we get two answers…both right.
Ecclesia
The church is a group
The Greek word for church is ecclesia means “called out ones” and means a group of Christ followers living IN this world but not OF the world in belief and customs and culture and character.
2Co 6:16 says “and what agreement does a temple of God have with idols? For you are the temple of the living God, as God has said, "I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."
The church is an individual
The church is also individuals joined together. Like our body is of many parts so also we are individuals joined together with each other
1Co 6:19 says “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit in you, whom you have of God? And you are not your own” and all followers in Christ have Christ living in them.
Conclusion: The institutionalized church is really a contradiction in terms since we have no cement buildings as houses of worship as defined by the bible. We are called to be light in the dark places of this world. We are called to be salt in the market places where all of humanity gathers. We are called to be yeast and blend in and transform all areas of society. We are called to GO. Therefore if the church is not found in the Arts world, the Business world, the Religious world, the media world, the education world, the science world, the family world and the government world than that brand of church is a bastard system and not the real child of God as explained by scripture |
